Empty Homes Strategy

We are continuing to work to bring empty homes back into use in west Cheshire.

Thank you to everyone who took part in our engagement. We have prepared a report that summarises the feedback from this:

The feedback was used to help develop the Empty Homes Strategy 2022-27. The strategy was considered by the Council's Cabinet on 8 June 2022 and it was approved.

Background

As of August 2021, west Cheshire had in total 4,827 empty homes, and of these 1,504 had been empty for more than six months. At the same time there were almost 6,500 applicants on our housing register. Returning empty homes back into use will help alleviate this issue as it is both cheaper and faster than building new homes.

The Empty Homes Strategy aims to bring empty homes back into use. Bringing more homes onto the market will bring numerous benefits to the community, namely providing opportunities for more affordable housing. It will also help to decrease anti-social behaviour, reduce the risk to public health from unsafe structures and finally, help to maintain and improve the housing market.

We want to hear your views on how we can work with owners of empty homes to bring their houses back into use.
