Hadlow Road controlled crossing

Construction work began on site in mid‑March and is expected to take approximately six weeks to complete. To carry out the scheme safely and efficiently, a full road closure is currently in place.

During this period, we have coordinated with a second contractor (Scottish Power) who will be undertaking essential electrical works for a new main along the same route. By bringing their programme forward, Scottish Power will avoid the need for a separate future closure and prevent the newly resurfaced road from being disturbed later on.

Introducing a new controlled crossing

Work is now underway to install a new controlled crossing on Hadlow Road where it meets the Wirral Way. This location has long posed visibility challenges, making it difficult for users to cross safely on this busy route. The new crossing will significantly improve safety for everyone.

The scheme has been fully funded by Active Travel England and has been designed by our Highways and Transport Strategy Teams.

A new type of multi‑user crossing: the ‘TRIXIE’

This project features an innovative crossing design, internally named a ‘TRIXIE’ crossing. It provides three dedicated crossing points, tailored to the needs of:

  • horse riders
  • cyclists
  • pedestrians

By separating the crossing facilities, the design helps reduce conflict between different users and supports safer, smoother movement across Hadlow Road.
