TRIXIE
A pioneering new controlled crossing designed to safely accommodate pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders is now open on Hadlow Road at its junction with the Wirral Way.
One of Cheshire West and Chester's first TRIXIE crossings is now operational on Hadlow Road, providing dedicated signal-controlled crossing facilities for pedestrians, cyclists and equestrians at the junction with the Wirral Way.
The innovative scheme has been introduced to address longstanding visibility and safety concerns at the site.
Improved access along a key active travel and recreational route
The new facility addresses longstanding road safety concerns at a location where limited visibility and traffic volumes have made it difficult for users to cross Hadlow Road safely. The crossing provides a safer, more convenient route for the wide range of people who use the popular active travel and recreational corridor.

Construction began in March and was completed over a six-week period. A full road closure was required to enable the scheme to be delivered safely and efficiently.
Fully funded by Active Travel England, the scheme was designed and delivered by Cheshire West and Chester Council's Highways and Transport Strategy teams.
The project incorporates an innovative crossing design internally named as a ‘TRIXIE’ crossing, which provides three separate and dedicated crossing facilities for different user groups:
- Horse riders
- Cyclists
- Pedestrians
By providing distinct crossing points tailored to the needs of each user group, the layout reduces potential conflict between users, improves visibility and enhances safety and accessibility for everyone crossing the road.
The crossing is particularly well suited to this location, where the Wirral Way attracts a diverse mix of walkers, cyclists and equestrians. The design allows each group to cross in a manner that is both intuitive and safe, while maintaining efficient traffic movements on Hadlow Road.
We would like to thank the British Horse Society for their input and support.
