Mutual exchange
Overview
What is a mutual exchange?
A mutual exchange happens when two or more tenants agree to swap homes with each other. You can exchange with:
- another Council tenant
- a tenant from another housing provider or local authority — as long as their landlord agrees
If you’re thinking about moving, a mutual exchange can be a great way to find a home that better fits your lifestyle and circumstances. We encourage swaps that help you to:
- move to a bigger home as your family grows
- downsize if you no longer need as many bedrooms
- live closer to family, work, or essential services
- find a property that meets your medical or accessibility needs
We’re here to guide you through every step of the process.
