4.7.3 Seating

Benches must have back rests to be age-friendly.

SHOULD

Benches without arm rests should be used to allow ease of access from a wheelchair or mobility scooter.

Benches and seating should be located every 100m on high streets and through green spaces.

Benches should be located in areas where people will find it most comfortable to sit. This is generally at the edges of public spaces, in areas that offer shade, close to amenities, or simply somewhere with a good view. They should not back on to busy roads.

Benches should primarily be hardwood timber or cast iron.

COULD

Benches could be combined with planters or parklets to add street greenery.
