6.4.4 Stone
The colour of the sandstone chosen must match local examples, both when extending or altering existing stone buildings, or when constructing new buildings.
The type of sandstone used must be appropriate to the style of house. Most walls will be rubble stone, with ashlar only appropriate on formal or prominent buildings.
The colour of mortar for stonework must match the colour of the stone or be a lighter tone than the stone itself.
Stone houses must have a recognisable stone lintel.
Reconstituted or cast stone must be red and only be used for details such as lintels, sills, string courses, plinths or around openings. It must not be used for walls. If a dwelling is to be entirely faced in stone, it must be natural stone.
Buff-coloured reconstituted stone must not be used.
Where left exposed, reconstituted or cast stone must be red toned to match the local sandstone. It must not be buff.
*Include a tick/cross example of good and bad stone specification.
