How to ensure a successful tenancy

Overview

The Renters Rights Bill is currently being debated in Parliament. There are likely to be significant changes for both landlords and tenants, in particular for starting and ending tenancies. Full details and dates for the changes have yet to be finalised. More details to be published in due course.

In this section you will learn more about how to ensure a successful tenancy as a landlord or tenant with private rented accommodation. There is advice on what you should consider before you start the tenancy, what you need to do during the tenancy, and what you should do at the end of the tenancy. Social Housing tenants should refer to their Housing Association’s website or the Housing Ombudsman for further information.

There is advice on what to do if you are struggling to pay your rent, or if you think the condition of the property needs attention. Your landlord has certain responsibilities towards you and the property whilst you are renting.

Your rights and responsibilities as a tenant will depend on factors such as whether the landlord lives in the same property as you, how long you have lived there and what type of tenancy agreement you have.
