General rules for all Household Waste Recycling Centres

Sites may sometimes close earlier than advertised if dark, for safety reasons. We recommend arriving at least 10 minutes before closing, as sites will shut down promptly at the designated times.

What types of waste can be taken?

All sites* will accept the materials listed below:

    • paper, books, cardboard, glass, textiles (including shoes), wood, green waste, metal, cans, engine oil, plastic bottles, cooking/vegetable oil, batteries
    • wood, chipboard, rubble and soil
    • small and large domestic electrical appliances e.g. fridges, freezers, televisions, monitors
    • fluorescent tubes and bric-a-brac (general re-usable items)
    • left over paint (this may go for reuse) and empty paint tins

The full list can be found in the document below.

*Frodsham and Tattenhall currently have some exceptions.

Tyres, gas cylinders and asbestos

  • Tyres: need specialist recycling facilities - please contact a local tyre fitting company about disposal
  • Gas cylinders: are the property of the cylinder supplier and should be returned
  • Asbestos: requires specialist processing and dealing with such a dangerous material at a public facility is difficult and expensive - from 1 April 2017, asbestos is no longer accepted

Before starting any work where asbestos may be present, consult local business directories to find a company licensed to remove and dispose of asbestos waste.

Further information

Useful information and licensed contractors can be found in our document below and on the HSE website.

Other types of waste not accepted include trade or commercial waste of any kind. Commercial or trade waste cannot legally be accepted at any HWRC. However, Chester will begin recycling trade waste from winter 2017.
