Introduction

1.6 The character of Cheshire West and Chester

Cheshire West and Chester includes the City of Chester, the towns of Ellesmere Port, Northwich and Winsford, along with smaller market towns and Key Service Centres such as Tarporley, Frodsham, Malpas and Farndon. The borough's countryside is characterised by rural villages set within picturesque landscapes such as the Sandstone Ridge, the Cheshire Plain and the Weaver Valley.

The borough’s rich history, shaped by its agricultural and industrial past, has left a legacy of distinctive materials and building styles, most notably its red brick, sandstone and half-timbered buildings. The materials and design elements that define the Cheshire West and Chester vernacular are explored in Section 6 (Built Form) and Section 7 (Identity).
