Changing Places at Brio's Lifestyle Centre

Disabled visitors can now use a special changing facility which offers more safety and comfort

Standard disabled toilets do not always meet the needs of people with profound and multiple learning or physical disabilities. Even day-to-day activities that many people enjoy without a second thought are not available to people with extra needs simply because they can’t use the toilets.

People with spinal injuries, muscular dystrophy and multiple sclerosis, as well as other challenging conditions, can need extra equipment and space to allow them to use the toilet safely and comfortably.

Changing Places facilities provide that safe space. They are specially designed with equipment such as an adjustable bench and hoist, but they are scarce. Now the Council's Public Health team has secured funds for a Changing Places facility at Brio' Lifestyle Centre in Winsford to make sure everyone has the chance to use the leisure centre.

Local resident Dan Hitchen is happy with the new facility: "The toilet is very nice. It has a button that takes it up and down. The sink has a button that makes it go up and down too.

"I also loved the pink bed, it was cool. There was a button for letting us in and out of the pool. The best thing was the toilet flush which we could work by waving at it."
