3.8.2 Spatial requirements and dimensions

The following rules set out the detailed geometric requirements for parking bays.

MUST

Parking bays must be set out to the minimum dimensions set out in the table below.

SHOULD

Where spaces are located next to a potential obstruction (wall, fence, hedge, street trees) an aisle width of 0.5m should be added to the width of the space.

SHOULD

There are no set manoeuvring space dimension requirements. The width should be determined based on the street type, parking type and confirmed using swept path analysis. It is not necessary to access the parking space in one manoeuvre.

COULD

For perpendicular parking, a wider bay could be used to allow a narrower aisle or street width, and this would be preferable to a wider aisle.

Parking bay dimensions

Parking TypeDimensionsNotes
Perpendicular and echelon parking2.5m × 5.0m
Accessible perpendicular and echelon parking3.7m × 6.2mSmaller spaces could be permitted where adjacent to a level area (e.g. where the bay is at the same level as the footway).
Parallel parking2.0m × 6.0m
Accessible parallel parking3.0m × 6.6mThe width can be reduced where the bay is level with the footway.
Motorcycle spaces0.8m × 2.0m
Loading bay3.0m × 14.0mDimensions exclude any manoeuvring space. The bay should also include 45° splays.
