3.8.9 Cycle parking and storage
Well located, secure storage and parking will encourage cycling by making it a convenient and attractive.
Cycle storage and parking must be provided for all new developments, including visitor and customer parking. Refer to the latest CW&C Parking Standards SPD for guidance and quantums.
For terraced, semi detached and detached homes, cycle parking should be provided
- To the front of the home, or
- Within the home with easy access of the street, or
- In a garage.
Sheds in the rear garden will not count towards cycle storage, unless the rear garden has direct access to a street.
External residential bike parking must be provided in a shelter that is secure (usually subject to access controls) and protected from the rain.
Commercial and industrial developments should include secure long-stay bike storage for employees, in addition to any shorter-term external visitor bike parking.
For flats and maisonettes, cycle parking should be provided in a secure communal storage area.
Communal facilities could be provided to serve terraced, semi detached and detached homes as an alternative to on plot cycle parking. This type of parking is more efficient in terms of space. While primarily required for blocks of flats, it can also be used to serve individual homes.
Shared or communal cycle storage
The following needs to be considered when designing shared or communal bike shelters.
Any communal bike parking structures must comply with the requirements for materials set out in this Code.
Structures must meet Secured by Design standads for security and protection from theft.
Communal parking must provide a minimum of 5% of spaces which accommodate larger non-standard cycles, such as cargo bikes and adapted accessible bikes.
They should be situated in well overlooked locations, well lit, signed and close to the entrances of buildings (within 20m of the building they serve).
