3.4.3 Pavement design and crossovers

Vehicle crossovers

Street design will need to accommodate a requirement for vehicles to cross the pavement to allow access to residential and commercial properties, without prejudicing design quality for people walking, wheeling and cycling.

MUST

Vehicle crossovers must not lead to irregular pavement levels. The level change for a dropped kerb should be achieved using a short ramp that maintains the required effective pavement width. Where possible, this ramp should be integrated as part of the kerb.

MUST

The pavement at crossovers must be designed to accommodate the expected vehicle loading, with a minimum of Category 3 for residential driveways (BS 7533-101:2021).

COULD

Side roads and private accesses could use narrow entrance kerbing (sometimes known as Dutch cycle entrance kerbs) to maintain a more continuous and level footway across crossing points, improving comfort and accessibility for pedestrians and wheelchair users. This is applicable even where the street does not have segregated cycling infrastructure.
