Housing strategy/prospectus
A place to call my own
During 2024 and early 2025 we worked with Cheshire Disabled People's Panel to understand how people want to live their lives and what they want from the place they call home.
We spoke to people with learning disabilities, autism and mental health needs and they told us about the importance of being able to live in their community and their strong preference for alternative housing models that offer private, independent living spaces with shared areas, and a focus on sustainability and energy efficiency in homes.
"I like where I live now but I would like more information about the choices I could make in the future about where I live. I don't know where to find it, or what I can look forward to in the future. "

Accessible information: People said they need to have as much information as possible about all choices for housing in a range of accessible formats (e.g. easy read, British Sign Language and videos) to ensure they can make informed choices about where they live and who with.
Reliable transport solutions: Transport remains an issue across our borough as it has large rural areas as well as large towns and a City. People felt that their housing needs to be near routes to other places, to places of interest for work and leisure. They do not want to be isolated at home and need to build connections with their community.
Person-centred housing plans: People told us that, as their needs will changeover time, they would like a way of communicating their desire and need to move to the next home and have ownership of that plan depending on their circumstances. People want to have the ability to change where they live, to live with others or on their own, change the type of property they live in and plan for changing physical needs as they get older.
"I live in a shared house at the moment which is ok, but I would prefer to live in my own space that is more than just a bedroom, with a kitchen and bathroom so that I do more things for myself. Then it would be really good if there was somewhere I could meet my friends and get support from staff on site if I need it."
